Section 1 of 4 · About DPFs

1. DPFs, warning lights and limp mode

What is a DPF?

Diesel engines are efficient, but they create sooty particulates in their exhaust that are bad for health. Your Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) removes them by pushing exhaust gases through a maze of fine channels that trap the soot.

The engine management system is meant to regenerate the filter when needed, by heating it to burn off the collected soot. For various reasons this can fail – one of the most common is a vehicle only used for short journeys, so it never gets fully up to temperature. When the filter becomes clogged, exhaust flow is blocked and eventually the engine management will apply a partial shut-down.

The filter is a sealed unit and expensive to replace – but with the right tools and techniques it can be cleaned.

The DPF warning light is on – why?

A DPF warning light means soot is blocking the filter and the engine hasn’t been able to clear it on its own. By the time the light comes on, the blockage is already serious – so don’t wait for limp mode. Call us on 0333 366 1404 and we’ll advise on the right next step.

Can I still drive?

If you have an engine management light on, the problem needs to be fixed – even if the light goes off from time to time. It means the engine isn’t working properly.

Engine management systems will often put the vehicle into limp mode (“limp-home” mode) once the fault is detected, and it usually stays that way until the fault is cleared. You may be able to get home, but until it’s fixed the vehicle isn’t really usable – and ignoring it can lead to the vehicle stopping altogether, which is harder and costlier to fix.

Many garages will simply replace the DPF, but that’s expensive and often unnecessary: in most cases it can be cleaned on the vehicle at much lower cost.

My car is in limp mode – can you still clean it?

Yes. As long as the vehicle starts and runs, we can usually clean the DPF on the vehicle. If it won’t start, our off-car factory cleaning service is the answer.

Do I really need a DPF? Can’t I just have it removed?

Yes, you do need it. Some garages will offer to cut the DPF out, but while it isn’t illegal for them to do it, it is 100% illegal for you to drive the vehicle afterwards – and if caught you can be fined upwards of £2,000. Your vehicle will also fail its MOT if the DPF is missing or not working properly, and it will have little resale value.

DPFs are a legal requirement for good reason: they remove diesel soot from the exhaust, and modern engines with DPFs have brought about a real improvement in air quality, particularly in cities.

Section 2 of 4 · Costs and booking

2. Prices, booking and coverage

What will it cost?

Mobile DPF cleaning usually costs £325 – £385 plus VAT, depending on model and age. Off-car factory cleaning prices start from £250 (exc VAT), including collection and return.

Your options are buying a new DPF and having it fitted (the most expensive option), sending the DPF off to be cleaned, or our mobile on-car cleaning. Ours is usually the quickest and best-value option, especially once you include garage labour for removing and refitting a unit – and it’s done while you wait, so you’re not without your vehicle for days or weeks.

For an exact price for your vehicle, call us on 0333 366 1404 or fill in the enquiry form.

What is the booking fee for?

The booking fee secures the engineer, job date and time of your choosing. It also covers the pre-clean vehicle health check and investigation, where we confirm whether your vehicle needs the clean. The report is emailed to you for your records.

How soon can you come?

We usually have next-day appointments available, sometimes even same-day if you call early enough.

Is my local area covered?

Yes – DPF Fixer engineers work nationwide. For off-car cleaning, our courier collects from anywhere and returns the DPF by overnight delivery.

Do I have to be there while you clean the DPF?

We need you there at the beginning and the end – for access to the vehicle, the diagnostic tests, paperwork and payment. Once the cleaning itself has started, you don’t have to stay.

Can I book online?

Off-car cleaning can be booked online here. For a mobile clean, call us on 0333 366 1404 or send us your details using the enquiry form and we’ll call you back.

Section 3 of 4 · The cleaning process

3. How our DPF cleaning works

How does cleaning work?

We provide a full deep-cleaning service for diesel and petrol particulate filters (DPFs and GPFs), aiming to remove 95–98% of the filter’s contents:

  • Pre-clean health check: our engineer reads the live data from your vehicle’s ECU to see how full the filter is, and checks the sensors, glow plugs and other components involved, to make sure the fault isn’t being caused by something else.
  • Deep clean of the DPF: using our own in-house cleaning solution – the clean itself takes around an hour.
  • Post-clean health check: we review the live data again to confirm the DPF has been cleared, reset the warning lights and check for any other fault codes. Where possible we do a short road test to confirm full power is restored.
  • Your reports: copies of both health checks are emailed to you for your records.
  • 30-day aftercare warranty on the cleaning work.
How long will the visit take?

The clean itself takes around an hour. Allowing for the diagnostic checks before and after, most visits take about 90 minutes – longer if the DPF is very heavily blocked.

My garage says they can regenerate the DPF. Will that work?

Regeneration means heating the DPF to around 600°C to burn off the soot inside. It happens automatically when the engine management system senses a build-up. A mechanic can also force it, but that carries a risk of cracking or damaging the DPF. If the engine’s own regeneration has failed to clear the blockage, a forced regeneration rarely works without proper cleaning as well. Read more here.

How can I be sure your clean will work? A local garage cleaned it and the light came back on.

Garages often try to burn the soot off with a forced regeneration, but that doesn’t clear severe blockages. We specialise in DPF cleaning and can remove even the most stubborn blockages, using a cleaning solution we manufacture ourselves.

Will you reset the dashboard lights?

Yes. After the clean, the engineer resets the relevant warning lights.

My garage says the DPF needs replacing because it’s blocked. Is that true?

Not usually. A blocked DPF can almost always be cleaned – clean where suitable, replace only where necessary. If the DPF is physically damaged it will need replacing, and we’ll tell you.

Will you fix my vehicle’s other faults too?

We deal with the DPF and the faults and blockages related to it, and reset the dash lights. A blocked DPF often has an underlying cause – such as sensor, EGR, injector, turbo or thermostat faults – and our engineer will advise you on anything else that needs fixing.

When can’t you clean the DPF on the vehicle?

We always run a full diagnostic health check first to make sure the clean can be done. If the vehicle won’t start or run properly, there are other faults that need fixing first – or the DPF can be removed and sent to us for off-car factory cleaning. If the DPF is physically damaged, it will need replacing.

Section 4 of 4 · After the clean

4. Warranty, aftercare and prevention

Is a warranty offered?

Yes. Every DPF clean comes with a 30-day warranty covering the cleaning work we carried out. How the vehicle is driven also affects the DPF, so our engineer will advise you on keeping it healthy after the clean.

What if the warning light comes back on?

Call us straight away. You’re covered by our aftercare, and we’ll arrange to come back and investigate.

How long will the clean last?

That depends on how the vehicle is used and the health of the engine. Our engineer will explain why your DPF became blocked, so you can reduce the chance of it happening again, and let you know when your next preventative clean is due.

How do I keep my DPF healthy?

Get any underlying faults – such as sensors, EGR or injectors – fixed, keep the vehicle properly serviced, and have the DPF professionally cleaned at the recommended interval. Vehicles used mainly for short journeys are more likely to block again, so if a warning light appears, call us rather than waiting for limp mode.

A good-quality additive can also help keep a healthy DPF in good condition between cleans – our own EcoPeak range is available in our online shop. Additives will not unblock a blocked DPF, though, and no additive can guarantee it won’t block again. If a warning light is on, the DPF needs cleaning.

How often should I have the DPF cleaned?

Cars: soot and ash start to build up in the DPF whenever the vehicle is driven. The effects are minimal at first, but gradually the engine has to work harder. Driving patterns, fuel quality and engine health all play a part, but for a sensible balance we recommend a professional DPF clean every 20,000 miles or 24 months. This greatly reduces the risk of costly repairs, keeps emissions in check and maintains fuel efficiency.

Vans and LCVs: especially those doing short urban trips or running speed-limited, the intervals should be shorter – and the benefits of cleaning are often more noticeable.

HGVs: ash build-up is a bigger issue than soot, because regeneration doesn’t clear it. Scheduled cleaning based on engine hours is an essential part of fleet management – see our fleet DPF maintenance page or talk to our commercial team.
