Didn’t think petrol vehicles had a particulate filter?

Since Euro 6, most direct-injection petrol engines have one – including everyday fleet models from VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT, Mercedes, BMW, Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall, Hyundai and Kia. When it can’t clear itself, soot and ash build up until it restricts the engine. For fleets, that means company cars, pool cars, hybrid taxis and petrol vans can all end up in limp mode with a filter warning.

We usually have next-day slots, sometimes even same-day, anywhere in the UK. The clean takes about 90 minutes at your depot, office or customer site – and we can work through several vehicles in one visit.

Filter warning light?

A GPF or OPF warning means soot and ash are blocking the filter. Do not wait for limp mode – the vehicle will lose power and sooner or later stop, which makes it harder and costlier to fix. A non-runner needs the filter off for a factory clean.

Hybrids and plug-in hybrids

Hybrids are especially prone to blocked petrol particulate filters. The petrol engine may only run in short bursts, so the filter rarely gets hot enough for long enough to clear itself – a common pattern for hybrid taxis and urban pool cars. We clean hybrid filters the same way, and explain how duty cycle may be contributing.

GPF removal is not an option
Removing or tampering with a particulate filter is illegal in the UK. It’s an automatic MOT failure and can invalidate your insurance. The right answer is cleaning – or replacement where necessary.

What’s the difference between a GPF, OPF and PPF?

Nothing that matters for cleaning. GPF (gasoline particulate filter), OPF (Otto particulate filter, the term VW Group and Mercedes use) and PPF (petrol particulate filter) are different names for the same part.

Is it safe to keep driving with a GPF warning?

We wouldn’t recommend it. Ignoring the light usually ends in limp mode or the vehicle stopping, and a restricted filter puts extra strain on the engine and turbo. Get it checked as soon as you can.

Our hybrids keep getting filter warnings. Can you help?

Yes. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids often block their filters because the petrol engine rarely runs long enough to clear it. We clean them the same way, and we’ll explain how the vehicles’ duty cycle may be contributing.

What does it cost?

Off-car factory cleaning is from £250 (exc VAT) for a one-off unit, including collection and delivery, and from £210 (exc VAT) with a Trade Account. Mobile cleaning is priced by vehicle, number of vehicles and site – send us your fleet details for tailored pricing. A replacement filter is typically £700 plus, before fitting.

Will an additive or a long drive fix it?

If the warning keeps coming back, or the vehicle has lost power, the filter is usually past what it can clear on its own – and additives can’t remove ash or fix the fault behind it. Having it assessed is quicker and cheaper in the long run.

How often should a petrol particulate filter be cleaned?

We recommend a professional clean every 20,000 miles or 24 months, whichever comes first – sooner for hybrids and vehicles doing mostly short trips. We can build it into a fleet maintenance plan.

Can you do several vehicles in one visit?

Yes. One engineer, or a team for larger sites, can work through several vehicles in a single visit, with consolidated invoicing for account customers.
